Venice Lightning Strike Survivor Meets His Rescuers

Posted: Updated:
(FOX11) A month and a day has passed since the fatal lightning strike suddenly hit the shore off Venice Beach, hospitalizing about a dozen people. One of the most critically injured patients was reunited with his rescuers by the Venice Pier Thursday.

Survivor Dr. Bob Kilroy shared that he was clinically dead for 10 minutes from electrocution and drowning before his heart started working again,  but you'd never be able to tell by looking at him.

“Nice to see you, thank you for being here,” Kilroy said to LA County Lifeguard Ben Gottlieb who performed lifesaving CPR on him the day of the lightning strike.

“There's not a day that does by that my ribs don't think about you,” Kilroy laughed.

It was on July 27th, on this same beach where Gottlieb and other lifeguards were working on him as his daughter called out for her father to “please stay.”

“My heart and my lungs probably stopped working the seconded that lightning hit, my lungs filled with water, my heart had stopped, I was wearing my body glove, and that kept me a float,” Kilroy said.

Kilroy had been teaching his daughter Emily to surf when the sudden storm hit, she's the one who pulled him back on shore.

“It all started with a 15-year-old who was down there with me, who got knocked out by the same lightning strike and when she came too looked to the water to see where her dad was, saw me floating and regardless of everything that happened in that moment, she turned around and started to drag me in, calling for help,” Kilroy said.

Emily says she remembers waking up under water before she saw here dad floating on his back nearby.

“I was scared honestly, I didn't know if he was okay, i didn't know if he was breathing,” Emily said.

Dr. Kilroy is a chiropractor and seasonal lifeguard. He says he'd come to the beach daily for his morning workout. Fellow lifeguard Ben Gottlieb says he would see Kilroy and they'd yell “hi” to each other. On July 27th, Gottlieb says he didn't realize he was performing CPR on the same man.

“At about 10 minutes in, that's when Bob's spirit came in and he started breathing,” Gottlieb said. It was an incredible moment.”

Kilroy says he doesn't remember the lightning strike and can not talk to what it feels like.

“People keep asking me what it was like to be struck by lightning, I say I don't know. They ask me if I have any super powers, not that I know of,” Kilroy said. “One thing I learned was the significance of saving someone's life,” Kilroy said.

His daughter Emily says she plans to get CPR certified so she'll be prepared in case she finds herself in a similar situation in the future. Her father says he couldn't be more proud or grateful to her for acting the way she did.
