Hall Co. students return to field for prayer

Posted: Updated:
HALL COUNTY, Ga. - Students at a Hall County High School organized and took part in a prayer circle Wednesday after an organization threatened to sue the school system to stop the school's football coaches from incorporating prayer into games and practices. A similar prayer gathering took place Thursday morning on school grounds.

The Wednesday prayer circle took place on the football field at Chestatee High School at around 7:45 a.m.

Students tell FOX 5 they want to show that they are standing up for God and what they believe in.

The American Humanist Association, an advocacy group based in Washington, D.C., says the Chestatee High School football program is violating the constitution, and needs to stop before the court gets involved.

The group sent a letter to school officials Tuesday, threatening the lawsuit.

The organization says it represents the rights and interests of humanists and atheists and works to promote the constitutional separation of church and state. They contend football officials are overstepping their constitutional bounds at Chestatee High.

School officials tell FOX 5 they found out about the allegations on Tuesday and an investigation has been started to look into the claims.

According to the American Humanist Association, a concerned citizen who the group won't identify first contacted them about the issue.

School officials hope to have a response in the coming days.
