MCSO: Stash of nearly 90 sticks of dynamite found

Posted: Updated:
An explosive discovery. The Maricopa County Sheriff's Office arrested a man who they say hid almost 100 sticks of stolen dynamite near 24th Ave & Thomas.

Deputies believe they found all the dynamite, but they're cautioning anyone who sees anything that resembles dynamite to contact them.

Authorities got a tip and found 7 sticks buried near Baseline & Miller. They also found 85 sticks near 24th Ave & Thomas.

They say the suspect was trying to sell the stolen dynamite which was stored dangerously close to a large apartment complex and schools.

"Our main concern is public safety, we had to get the dynamite out of commission so nobody would get hurt if that dynamite went off accidentally," said Sheriff Arpaio.

The sheriff said Donald McMahan admitted to stealing the dynamite from a central Phoenix warehouse, and he intended to sell it. MCSO estimates each stick could sell for $500+, but to who?

"That's our concern, who would buy it, what would they do with it," he said.

Before McMahan allegedly hid the explosives Sheriff Arpaio said he kept them with him at a hotel near 24th Ave & Thomas.

That hotel is within 100 yards of two schools, a potentially deadly situation had the dynamite gone off.

MCSO's bomb squad detonated the dynamite on-site. Detectives believe they found all the dynamite, but they're warning the public that any explosives, including dynamite, that is found should be considered dangerous and unstable.

"Do we know if there's more buried somewhere else? We don't think so, but we cannot take the chance," said Arpaio.
