America's Oldest Woman Celebrates 116th Birthday

Posted: Updated:

CAMDEN, AR- While most people across the country were celebrating America's birthday on July 4th one woman was celebrating her 116th birthday.

It's not uncommon to hear the national anthem on the fourth of July.

But at the Silver Oaks nursing home in Camden, Arizona they were singing to another tune.

That's because Friday was resident Gertrude Weaver's 116th birthday.

With weaver being born in 1898, Friday made her the oldest woman in the United States.

She says her long healthy life is thanks to a philosophy she lives by.

"I treat everybody the way I want them to treat me," Weaver said.

And weaver was treated well today.

She received a plaque from the Genealogy Research Group of Los Angeles naming her the oldest woman in the United States.

The mayor of Camden named today Gertrude weaver day and she even received a letter from President Obama.

But her family says the real gift, is her.

"It's his blessing for her because of her life and who knows what he based his judgment on nobody knows but he based it on something and it must be a good quality she has," said granddaughter Gradie Welch.

Weaver along with her family and friends hope she will be able to sing "Happy Birthday" for years to come.
