WATCH: Inside the fireworks show, filmed by a drone

Posted: Updated:
TAMPA (FOX 13) - You've probably never seen fireworks like this: A South African man flew a drone into a West Palm Beach fireworks show and the resulting footage is amazing. But some people are concerned about the idea.

There's no question the video, uploaded to YouTube by Jos Stiglingh back on May 13, is stunning. It first shows the display from a distant aerial perspective, then the DJI Phantom 2 UAV moves in for a closer look.

Fireworks explode over the water right next to the drone, sending multicolored ribbons of sparks shooting and swirling around the quadcopter -- all set to an Andrea Bocelli aria.

The video has been watched nearly a half-million times, and nearly all of the comments on the video are supportive of the effort. But a few people called out Stiglingh for the potential danger.

"Totally irresponsible. Flying over people is a big NONO," one user said.

"What worries me is if these drones get cheaper and more pervasive, will we have a drones interfering with all kinds of activities?" offered another, who identified himself as a photographer.

Drones are already making waves over beachgoers and concerts, and the FAA is in the middle of a lengthy study about UAV regulations.

But fireworks shows usually have very specific safety regulations, and Forbes contributor Gregory McNeal says drone flights through such shows are clearly not OK.

"It should be obvious that flying a drone through a fireworks display is unsafe and illegal," he wrote. "Unfortunately stories like these demonstrate that what is clearly unsafe to most people, is somehow lost on a few careless operators."
