Cops: man sprayed fire officials with garden hose

Posted: Updated:

SHELTON, Conn. (AP) - Two fire officials in Connecticut ended up on the wrong end of a hose, and now a 77-year-old man is facing criminal charges.

Shelton police say Mark Lilly sprayed a garden hose Tuesday at the local fire marshal and assistant fire chief when they asked him to put out a fire he had going in his yard.

Lilly was issued a misdemeanor summons accusing him of breach of peace and open burning. He was ordered to appear in Derby Superior Court on July 1.

Police say the fire officials went to Lilly's home for a complaint about open burning. Officials say Lilly became verbally abusive and refused to put out the fire.

A message seeking comment was left for Lilly on Wednesday. His wife had no comment.

It's a running joke that if you mention the Eugene O'Neill Theater Center to nearly anyone in Hollywood they're going to know exactly what you're talking about because odds are they might have gotten their first big break there. Would you believe some Hollywood's biggest stars -- Meryl Streep, Michael Douglas, Angela Bassett -- got their start in a big red barn in the middle of nowhere.

The Metro-North Railroad has sacrificed safety for on-time performance, according to a report released Wednesday by a Metropolitan Transportation Authority panel. The report echoes an assessment conducted this year by the Federal Railroad Administration, which investigated after a string of Metro-North accidents including a December 2013 derailment that killed four riders in the Bronx.
