Police say it is just too tempting for some people: the dry bed of Lake Peachtree. It has been luring pickup truck drivers who have gotten stuck, and hikers who've had to be rescued by police.
Lake Peachtree is the recreational center of Fayette County. It's main purpose is a reservoir for Fayette County. With millions of dollars in repairs need to the dam, the lake is being drained. Ever so slowly the level is dropping...and dry bed now exposed is deceptive.
With Fourth of July festivities, including fireworks, drawing thousands of people to Lake Peachtree in the next few weeks, police say they will put up more barricades, with warning signs to keep off the lake bed.
In the case of the pickups that have been stuck, police say the owners have spent thousands to recover their vehicles...in an operation that requires excavators and small bulldozers.
Around the Fourth of July both the police and fire departments are going to short handed. A rescue could take hours and come with a hefty price for anyone stuck out there. Not just the cost of pulling a vehicle out...but the police fines that come with be caught.
