NEW HAVEN, Conn. (AP) - A fifth new power supply substation has been put into service on Metro-North's New Haven commuter rail line that officials say will add redundancy to help avoid electrical outages.

Connecticut Gov. Dannel P. Malloy and state transportation officials on Thursday toured the New Haven Rail Yard. It's being upgraded and expanded over several years at a cost of $1.15 billion.

The State Bond Commission recently approved $80 million to pay for a new warehouse for rail car components, storage tracks for rail cars, demolition of an old storage facility and a pedestrian bridge linking Union Station and the yard.

A fire last month that destroyed equipment in Greenwich used for switching trains forced delays. In September, a power outage in suburban New York City limited Metro-North service for nearly two weeks.
