GALVESTON, Texas (FOX 26) -
The Recreational Boating & Fishing Foundation Take Me Fishing campaign has ranked Galveston Island State Park as among the ten best of the inaugural Top 100 Family Friendly List of Places to Boat and Fish in the U.S.
Within the top 100 list, Galveston Island State Park is ranked sixth with Lake Berryessa in the Napa Valley of California taking the honor as first on the list.
Park and recreation areas in 24 states are represented on the list with a total of nine Texas parks recognized, among them Lake Livingston State Park and Huntsville State Park, both north of Houston.
The Take Me Fishing campaign gathered votes from throughout the U.S. to provide families and outdoor enthusiasts with a recommended list of the best family-friendly places to experience the joys of boating and fishing as the weather warms up.
Criteria for the recognition includes sites with a public body of water within an hour of a major city and good fishing opportunities.
"We enlisted the help of state fish and wildlife agencies to identify popular locations, and asked fishing and boating enthusiasts who belong to our communities to vote on their favorite spots that are easily accessible and where the fish are known to bite most often," said Frank Peterson, RBFF president and chief executive officer.
The release of the Take Me Fishing Top 100 list serves as a prelude to National Fishing and Boating Week, which begins June 1 and ends on June 8.
"Whether you want to learn how to tie a knot or know where the closest boat ramp is, we have everything you need to learn, plan and equip your family for a great day on the water," said Peterson.
