NEW HAVEN, Conn. (AP) - The Metro-North Railroad has outlined a series of reforms it is implementing to improve commuter safety, a year after an accident in Bridgeport injured 76 people.

The railroad's action plan, released Thursday, includes speed restrictions, audits of engineers to ensure they are not speeding, and the installation of control systems that would halt trains before they crash.

The report came in response to a Federal Railroad Administration finding in March that Metro-North was more interested in on-time performance than safety.

Railroad President Joseph Giulietti, in a letter to the FRA that accompanied the report, says the railroad also is improving employee training and re-organizing its Safety Department.

Giulietti and federal lawmakers scheduled a news conference Friday in New Haven to discuss the reforms.
