One trick to take better pictures of your little ones

DUNEDIN (FOX 13) - Photographer Megan Garren has the artist’s eye.

"I love taking pictures of people," she said. "In the moment. Candid."

This budding photographer’s website is a gallery of unforgettable images. But the memories don’t come easy—especially when Megan’s shooting one of her favorite subjects: babies.

Kids move abruptly. And that’s a recipe for forgettable photos.

"Blurry ones," she says begrudgingly.

Enter Samantha McProvo. She’s chasing three elusive puppies around her yard. And she is on a mission.

"They're all rescue dogs," she says. “I've got to get their attention."

McProvo snaps adoption photos for Florida All Retriever Rescue. Prospective puppy parents peruse the pictures on the volunteer group’s Facebook page, so the stakes are high in this photo shoot.

"They fall in love with the photos of the dogs,” she explains. “And they say, ‘Oh my gosh, I have to have that particular dog.’"

Sam draws inspiration from an initiative called One Picture Saves a Life, which morphs pound puppy mugshots into canine glamour shots.

McProvo enlists a secret weapon to make sure every shot is irresistible. She captivates the hyperactive puppies by wrapping the lens with a specially-designed stuffed animal.

"Very simple," she says.

The invention is the type that will have you saying, "Why didn’t I think of that?”

For roughly $20, products such as the Shutter Hugger or Camera Creatures seize a dog’s attention just long enough to snap an irresistible image.

"It looks like they're smiling," McProvo says.

At this point Megan, the budding photographer of humans, gives the Camera Creature a try. She is immediately impressed.

She wraps the lens. She points the camera toward baby Callum. And he is transfixed.

"Got a little smile out of that," she says.

Garren figures she might need to make room in her equipment bag.

"I think that this is colorful and amazing," she says with a smile itself worthy of a photograph.
