A Houston woman credits social media and her online fitness community with helping her shed more than 100 pounds. Iriel Franklin is an accountant and busy mom. Health wasn't always a priority.
"About a year and a half ago I went to the doctor for a check up, and I was 300 pounds," said Franklin.
That and the fact her father had just passed away from a stroke and heart failure motivated Franklin to start clean eating and exercising.
She began posting pictures of her transformation on social media.
Franklin's online community is known as "Get Fit or Get Fat." In just a year she's gained more than 21,000 followers across different platforms and lost more than 100 pounds.
"This platform has allowed me to be accountable for myself. Because of all these people that follow you, you have to keep going."
A photo album on facebook is dedicated to others' transformation photos.
"What I love about Iriel and her team is they're very real. They're people working hard, and we're going to see overtime they get supremely fit and everyone following them will, too," said Terry Williams, a trainer with The League Elite Training Facility.
Iriel hopes it's just the beginning of a movement, not about size but health.
She's hosting a one year celebration of her weight loss Saturday evening at the JW Marriott at 5150 Westheimer from 6-10PM. Tickets are $10 at the door. There will be fitness and health talks from experts along with giveaways. For more information visit getfitorgetfat.com
