Legalizing marijuana: Could it happen in Arizona?

Posted: Updated:
PHOENIX (KSAZ) -

Here in Arizona, medical marijuana is already legal and a recent poll shows that most people would like to see pot legalized for recreational use as well.

According to the Behavior Research Center, 51 percent of Arizonans say "Yes" to legalized pot, just 41 percent opposed.

But could this actually become a reality?

Former New York City Mayor Rudolph Giuliani visited the FOX 10 studios Friday morning.  We asked him what he thinks about legalizing marijuana.

"If you legalize it you will proliferate it. It is not harmless. I do believe it has even more impact than alcohol in certain ways," he said.

But the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws, NORML, says pot is far less dangerous than alcohol.

"You never ever hear 'Look at that marijuana user shooting up everybody,' or 'That smoker starting a bar fight,' or 'That marijuana user driving a car and killing five people.'  When is the last time you have heard of that?" said NORML's Eric Johnson.

How about the chief law enforcement officer for the state of Arizona?  What does Attorney General Tom Horne think?

He is adopting a wait-and-see approach.

"Well Colorado and Washington are experimenting with that right now and there are a number of questions that have been answered and will be answered," said Horne. "It seems to me.. wise to wait and see what happens.  Does it have negative effects on society or does it not?"
