PHOENIX (KSAZ) - A Korean war veteran without a permanent home got a new place to live after a massive renovation project gives him a helping hand.

Thomas Bernard, better known as "Red," served in the Army and Air Force.

He's now 82-years-old and recovering from a stroke, but assisted living is not the place he wants to be.  Bernard was waiting for his next social security check when he learned he had a new home.

"I talked to Jake and he said he had a house here.. it needs a lot of work," he said.

Jake, the manager of Sunrise Vista Mobile Home Park, donated a manufactured home that needed a few improvements.

"There was no sliding glass door, there was no front door, so literally, cats would go into his house," said Jeremiah Churchill, program manager for Rebuilding Together.

Nearly 20 volunteers from Choice Hotels renovated the veteran's home Thursday.

"Surprised I didn't know what they were gonna do, what was going on, I didn't have no money to pay," said Bernard.

Workers added a fresh coat of paint, installed new flooring, new cabinets and brand new doors.

"They got the floor down in the bedroom and it's real nice, it's beautiful," said Bernard.  "I wouldn't be able to do it... I appreciate it all."

A huge renovation project to make his place home sweet home.

Volunteers set up an American flag right outside -- a sign of gratitude for his service to our country.

"I loved Red just when this project's over, what we do with Rebuilding Together does not end. I'll make sure he gets any assistance he needs, whether that's medical, food," said Churchill.

Bernard is praising the volunteers for a job well done.
