PHOENIX (KSAZ) -

He paved the way for some of biggest rock bands in history, but before there were groups like Motley Crue or Metalicca there was the one and only Alice Cooper.

A new documentary is telling the story of the shock rock legend, it chronicles Cooper's life both on stage, and behind the scenes wrestling with his onstage persona.

When filmmakers approached the shock rock legend Alice Cooper about a new doc opera on his life, he was on board with their vision.

"they said we can't just do a documentary on Alice, it has to be as theatrical as the character so we have to come in with a different style," said Cooper.

The film, titled "Super Duper Alice Cooper" explores his inner battle with his character.

"The whole Jekyll and Hyde thing made total sense to me. They said the dichotomy of you and the character being so far apart at one point you were one person, and now you're totally separated from him. I said yeah that is the story. I didn't know where I began and where Alice ended for a long period. When I got sober I realized, what killed Jim Morrison and Jimmy Hendrix and all those guys was that they couldn't divorce themselves from the character. You have to leave that character on stage and then go live your life," said Cooper.

Viewers will see the moment "Alice Cooper" was 'born', and when shock rock took form.

"We couldn't figure out why if you were going to say 'welcome to my nightmare' give them a nightmare. You know don't just say it, do it. And our band it was in our DNA we could not not be theatrical," he said.

The film also includes other moments in Alice Cooper history, including the infamous chicken incident

"We did feathers at the end, and John Lennon and Yoko are over here and Jim Morrison the doors are over there watching the show, and they are seeing it as art. Rock art. Then all the sudden somebody, I didn't bring the chicken, and I went well feathers, chicken, I get it, I'll just throw it in the audience, and the audience will take it home. The audience tore it to pieces. This was the peace and love festival by the way to this day every time I do a show; ASPCA are there going "Are you going to kill any animals?" I go, "I've never killed an animal. Ever in my life", I love animals," he said.

Of course another big part of the story is, you don't get a place in music history with theatrics alone

"We could back it up with the music, that's an important thing. That's when we went from sideshow to the main show. Is when you have 18 and school's out and all those big hit records suddenly now there were bands trying to be Alice Cooper," said Cooper.

"Super Duper Alice Cooper" will hit theaters nationwide starting April 30th.
