A security guard who was only on the job two weeks, is gunned down and killed at a Southwest Houston apartment complex.
Houston police have identified the slain security guard as 51-year-old Rene Almeida. The company he worked for, Texas State Private Security Services, says he was only hired two weeks ago to work at the apartments on 9700 Leawood Boulevard.
Homicide investigators are trying to determine if Almeida's own gun was used to kill him.
The guard's gun was missing from the scene and investigators believe the shooter may have taken it, though it's unclear if Almeida was shot with his own weapon.
The guard was found lying in the street.
Investigators says shortly before 12:30 a.m. Friday, a visitor tried to gain access, supposedly to see a friend, but Almeida would not let him in. A verbal altercation ensued and detectives say the man left, but minutes later neighbors heard gunshots and saw the guard laying on the ground. He was transported to Ben Taub General Hospital but died en route.
Witnesses tell FOX 26 News that they saw a man on a bike arguing with the guard but it didn't raise any alarms until they heard the gunshots.
Homicide investigators are hoping surveillance cameras near the complex will provide clues on who the shooter is.
