Improve your commute with the "One Bus Away" app

ATLANTA, Ga. -

Don't you hate when you're waiting for mass transit and have no idea when that train or bus will show up? Now, there's an app for that and it's saving people time and money.

We first introduced you to "One Bus Away" last year, as an app being developed on by students and professors at Georgia Tech. Now the app is up and running and helping hundreds navigate Atlanta through mass transit.

Greg Macfarlane uses his one bus away app just about every day to get home from work.

"I have a number of different ways to get home. I could take a bus and transfer. I can take a bus and walk a little ways or I can take a train and transfer to another bus," explains Greg. "The One Bus Away helps show me which path is going to be best for me at that time."

During development, developers said MARTA ridership was down due to long and inconsistent wait times.

"By having One Bus Away, it really removes the uncertainty from the waiting time," says Kari Watkins, Asst. Professor, Georgia Tech.

"There could be traffic that affects bus service, unexpected delays and when a bus gets behind schedule, you can end up standing out there waiting at the bus stop for 5, 10, 20 minutes even," said PhD student Candy Brakewood.

The application pulls live information from MARTA on routes and arrival times, helping you map out your trip more accurately. "I think the most important thing for me is that when I show up at a bus stop, I know if I haven't missed the bus already," adds Greg.

It's just another example of making your life more efficient, using technology in the palm of your hand.

"It's very useful. I sometimes wonder if those paper schedules you pull out of the side of the bus are going to be a thing of the past in a few years," Greg says.

The app was first designed in Seattle. Designers also say knowing exactly what time to expect the bus, makes riders feel safer.
