911 operator helps two women escape fire

Posted: Updated:
CLAYTON COUNTY, Ga. -
Clayton County authorities credit a 911 operator with saving the lives of a 77-year-old grandmother and her granddaughter who were trapped in their burning home. Clayton County 911 Operator Lori Stevens said it was one of the most difficult calls she's received in her 15 years as a dispatcher.

The fire started at the back of the house on Wednesday, April 9, and went through the home, trapping the young woman and the grandmother inside. But Stevens was able to walk the young woman through the steps to get out of the burning home and reassure her she would not leave her.

Stevens told her to stay as low as she could to the ground and feel her way to the window. After 7 chilling minutes, the two were able to escape the fire. Stevens credits her support group at the 911 center with helping her to stay cool under the pressure.
