NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

New York’s senior senator says it's time to bring the heroes back to the "Canyon of Heroes."

Senator Charles Schumer is calling for New York City to host a homecoming parade for troops returning from the Afghanistan and Iraq wars.

Parades down Broadway in lower Manhattan used to be a semi-regular event in the city from the 1920s until the 1960s.

With the US combat mission in Afghanistan expected to end this year, Schumer and the United Veterans War Council say it's the perfect time to revive the tradition.

“New York City held the first veteran's day parade in 1919, to welcome home those who served in World War I” Schumer said. “New York City is the best place, the only place, to host a national welcome home parade for the latest, the greatest generation of veterans.”

Schumer says he's asked the Defense Department to work with city officials to start planning.
