Jimmy Carter speaks out against abuse towards women

Posted: Updated:

Jimmy Carter is speaking out against female inequality. The former president's new Book "A Call To Action," discusses some of what he says are the worst abuses that women have to face in America.

President Carter recently sat down to talk with FOX 5's Chris Shaw about some of the issues discussed in his book.

According to President Carter, one of the worst examples of inequality towards American women is unequal pay.

"A woman, who does the exact same work as a man, gets 23% less pay in America than men do. And that's obviously not fair," says President Carter.

Mr. Carter also believes that there are not enough female elected officials.

"We rank 78th in the world, 77 other countries have more women in public office in all levels, than does the United States Of America. So we have a long way to go in giving women equal rights," says Carter.

President Carter is leading the way on an issue that democrats plan to use to get the vote out in the upcoming elections.

One of the more startling examples of Female abuse in the U.S. can be found on college campuses. Carter says only one out of 25 rape cases are reported across colleges nationwide.

"Because the women are discouraged from reporting when the crime is committed against them, by college presidents and deans and so forth, who doesn't want to bring discredit or bad name to their college campus," says President Carter.

President Carter has recently spent his time visiting other countries where violence, poor access to health care and religion are responsible for widespread discrimination towards women.
