Police: Transient drove from Kansas to have sex with underage Longwood girl

Posted: Updated:

Longwood Police arrest a man, accused of traveling all the way from Kansas to have sex with an underage female in Central Florida. That young girl turned out to be an undercover police officer.

After days behind the wheel, Christopher Lanning could be spending even more time behind bars. Officers arrested him on Tuesday afternoon, after a month-long Internet sting investigation.

"The Internet is a highway.  It's definitely dangerous, and if we're not monitoring what our children are doing, we could have these people out there that want to do our children harm," said Longwood Police Officer Kevin Tuck. "This individual thought that he was speaking with a young juvenile."

The "young juvenile" was actually an undercover officer, posing as a teenager at Lyman High School.  Police tell FOX 35 that Lanning unknowingly started talking to the officer, planning to have sex with a child.

Police said Lanning drove all the way from Kansas City to the Shell gas station on Dog Track Road, expecting to meet a 13-year-old girl.  Instead, he met a squad of Longwood police officers, waiting to arrest him.

Police don't know much about Lanning yet and believe he is a transient. Investigators have traced him from California, to Minnesota, to Kansas, through Oklahoma and now Central Florida's Seminole County Jail.

Lanning is charged with unlawful use of a two way device, obscene communication and traveling to meet a minor, and sending obscene material to a minor.
