Mystery after man found dead outside a burning Pearland home

PEARLAND, Texas (FOX 26) -

Pearland homicide and arson investigators are trying to piece together clues after a man was found dead outside a burning home.

A neighbor called 9-1-1 just after 4 a.m. this morning when he heard a single gun shot.  When the neighbor went to look out his window he saw a home on fire.

When police and fire arrived at the scene they found one man dead outside the home with a gun next to the body.

Fire crews quickly worked to put the fire out.  They say it appears to have started in the attic near a hot water tank.

Arson investigators will determine if the fire was intentionally set.  An autopsy has been ordered on the victim to determine if the cause of death was homicide or suicide.

Neighbors tell FOX 26 that the couple that lived in the home are separated and the woman has not been seen in quiet some time.
