Wake Up Money: Summer travel savings start now

Posted: Updated:
HOUSTON (FOX 26) -

It's that time of year when bargain hunters start searching out the best deals for summer travel.

One of the most expensive parts of some summer travel plans is the cost of airfare.  If you have a family the price of that alone is enough to cancel the whole trip.  But, there are ways to save money because the price of an airline seat can vary depending on which day you buy and which day you want to travel.

FOX 26 Morning news contributor Charlotte Stallings has several tips to make your dollars go farther.

  1. Search often, over longer lead time
    • Check frequently, refresh your browser
    • Remember fares fluctuate
    • See a great deal; pounce on it
  2. Get email alerts: Follow on Twitter, Facebook or Instagram
    • Easy to track fares/sales
    • Google "airfare alerts"
    • Follow your favorite airlines
    • @airfarewatchdog tweets good fare deals
  3. Flexible travel dates & times
    • +/- 3 days can save BIG money
    • Most airlines have a flex date calendar
    • Save money by taking red-eye flights or taking connecting flights instead of non-stops
    • Fly in and out of the biggest airports nearest your destination
  4. Find an unbelievable rate; look for extra fees
    • Will you be charged for checked luggage
    • Will you be charged for carry on luggage
    • Change fees
    • Offer you a refund if the cost of your fare goes down?

Other important tips to keep in mind.

  • The longer the flight the bigger the savings normally.
  • Higher airfare rates to Europe kick in May 16.
  • Try to complete your summer travel by June 7 or wait until August (prices are higher when kids are out of school)
