For anyone who has outstanding bills or overlooked an old debt and is being harassed by collectors, attorney John Mastriani and Certified Public Accountant Bob Martin say there are ways to stop them.
Debt collection companies are required to comply with the following guidelines:
Collectors cannot contact debtors before 8 a.m. or after 9 a.m.
Collectors cannot make repeated abusive, harassing or annoying calls
Collectors cannot contact debtors at their workplaces after they are told not to do so
Collectors must identify themselves.
Collectors must share the name and the address of the original creditor.
Collectors must inform debtors about their rights to dispute.
Collectors must verify the debt in writing.
