Suspect indicted in 1996 rape in Queens

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

A former resident of Far Rockaway, Queens, has been indicted on charges of raping a woman in her home back in 1996, according to Queens District Attorney Richard Brown announced.

The indictment and arrest were the result of a DNA hit that tied Richard Thomas, 47, to the rape, Brown said. He was charged with first-degree rape and first-degree sodomy.

The D.A. said that the office's DNA Prosecutions Unit has been looking at old unsolved rape cases going back to 1996. In this particular case, detectives located a T-shirt and a rug that were not previously tested for DNA. Testing matched semen found in the rug to Thomas, whose profile was in a DNA databank, Brown said.

Thomas is accused of breaking into a couple's home in Far Rockaway July 28, 1996, and raping a woman at gunpoint while threatening to shoot her and her husband, according to the indictment.

Attorney Scott Davis, who represents Thomas, declined to comment on the case, according to the AP.
