Contractor Sting: How Much For This Wall?

Posted: Updated:

Jose Interiano and his neighbor thought they were getting a pretty good deal when a contractor offered to build them a long concrete block wall between their two properties for only $2800 dollars.

He said he had a state license, as required by law, but he never gave them the particulars on that and they didn't check him out.  What they did do was give him almost the whole price in advance. The man came back with a couple of day laborers, dug a few holes, and never returned.  Ouch. Welcome to the real world, where would be contractors rip people off all day every day in California and other states. We have something called the Contractors State License Board which tries to go after those working without a license, and today they announced some 121 people were arrested in 9 different undercover stings throughout the state.

Granted it's ''only'' a misdemeanor with a fine, but if the unlicensed contractors repeat offenders, they could go to jail. The Board stresses that consumers need to be proactive, go to their website, where you can do an instant license check, and also see what if any disciplinary actions have been taken against licensed contractors. If they are not on there, that's a red flag.  It's not worth it in the long run to save a little money by okaying a low bid when you don't know who you're dealing with and have no way to guarantee the quality of the job . Jose filed a complaint, even gave the State the address of the guy he says ripped him off, investigators supposedly haven't been able to locate him. We'll see. He did get a judgement against the guy in small claims court, good luck collecting. Live and learn right ?
