The picture was sent to Antonio Saldivar's family the day authorities discovered his body floating in the Houston ship channel. Now, nearly a month later, the Saldivar family has released the photo and is publicly accusing Houston police of bad detective work.
Family friend, Gerri Ramos described the photo which has convinced the Saldivar family their son and brother was murdered.
"The autopsy report says ‘accidental death'," she said. ". I'm sorry but who's going to jump in the water, wanting to drown themselves with a teddy bear stuffed in their crotch?"
A police spokesperson says Ramos is wrong about the autopsy report because there hasn't been an official ruling on the cause of death. She also said the case is still under investigation. It began the day the teenager disappeared.
Saldivar was reported missing on Valentine's Day, which may explain why he had a teddy bear with him. Authorities found his car the following day, wrecked near Harrisburg road, but Saldivar was nowhere to be found. For the 13 days, his family and friends passed out fliers looking for the teen.
"He had a lot of dreams and the dreams are just sitting there now," his mother said. "They're not going to happen."
Saldivar's mother Connie Netro, along with his sister Jessica Perales, and community activist Quanell X, called a news conference Wednesday to distribute the picture. Saldivar's mother said police have ignored all her questions.
"Well, we already told you. That's their response," she said when asked what detectives say to her. " That's it."
