A massive mid-rise fire in Montrose threatened nearby homes and businesses. "Our windows are all cracked and smoke is coming in and it's unreal," explains Betty Hammer who lives in a townhouse a stones throw from the fire. The heat from the flames cracked her windows.
"Very scary. I've never seen billowing black smoke and flames like that," says Michelle Bond who works at The Whitfield Media Group in Montrose. The building that burst into flames around 12:30 in the afternoon was an upscale apartment community that was under construction. "It's a $70 or $80 million project," says resident John Vick.
Construction workers were sent running for their lives. "I'm just sad because we live in area and watching that construction, which is great for the community and it wasn't too far from completion, in a matter of hours it (the fire) has destroyed about a half year to a year's worth of work," says Clifford Ashcroft-Smith.
"I was really concerned when it first started. There were a lot of cars on this street. The street was completely blocked. Fire trucks couldn't get in," Vick explains.
"We could actually stand here and feel the embers coming down. We had five small fires on the top of our building," explains Ward Bond who works about two blocks from where the fire broke out. A number of homes and businesses were evacuated as the flames raged. The apartment building that was under construction was destroyed but fortunately there were no reports of injuries. "That's what I was praying for that God would keep everyone safe," says Michelle Bond.
