Some elementary students skipped school on Monday and helped their parents protest against a decision by the Houston Independent School District. Activists say this is just the beginning of rolling boycotts.
Dozens of people gathered in front of Dodson Elementary School early on Monday morning, with children as young as 3 years old, holding signs calling for the school to remain open.
"I was happy my son would have somewhere to be as a home school," said Desiree Johnson, a protester. "To know that they don't care enough about our children to keep our schools open, it's sad. It doesn't make any sense. It is harsh trying to explain this to my son. It is harsh and it's not fair,"
The HISD school board voted to shut down the Dodson campus because of low enrollment.
Students who currently attend Dodson will be zoned to attend classes at Blackshear Elementary beginning with the fall 2014 semester.
