A Spring Break party at a Southwest Houston hotel quickly got out of control and ended with a vehicle trying to run over a Houston police officer twice.
HPD received a call about a disturbance around midnight Friday morning in the 11000 block of the Southwest Freeway at the Hotel Preet. When officers arrived they witnessed nearly 100 young people in the hotel.
While inside the hotel, HPD officers heard several gunshots coming from the front parking lot.
According to HPD spokesperson, Kese Smith, 7 year HPD veteran officer E. Garza stepped out into the parking lot to investigate the shots being fired. When he did about 40 to 50 young people pointed towards a silver Jeep Cherokee as the source for those shots.
Officer Garza started to approach the vehicle when it accelerated towards him. The officer had to jump out of the way. The vehicle then turned around because the exit was blocked.
Officer Garza had his weapon drawn when a passenger in the vehicle displayed a weapon and pointed it at the officer as the vehicle again began to accelerate towards the officer.
The officer then fired several shots at the vehicle as it sped off. It is not known if anyone inside the vehicle was hit.
A vehicle matching the description of the one that tried to run over Officer Garza was stopped several blocks away. HPD is in the process of determining if it is the same vehicle.
