Jewel Bradley sat onthe porch outside her apartment and vividly described the day she thought heronly grandchild was about to die.
"I'm the baby's great grandmother," Bradley said.
She's talking about a baby who drank so much vodka last month, her bloodalcohol level measured in at 0.268. The baby's 17 year old mother, ShadreonJefferson, and 24 year old aunt, Shamara Batiste, are now charged withendangering a child.
"I'm the one who said, 'call the police.' And I think I had a right tocall the police," she said.
Bradley is the child's paternal great grandmother. The call for help took placelast month when Jefferson and Batiste dropped the baby off at her apartment.
"They brought that baby here drunk , and if we hadn't called the ambulancethat child would've been dead," she said. "I was scared when shethrew up on me. As I'm holding her, she's throwing up. I jumped up and said 'ohbaby', and me and my daughter, I said call 911 right now."
Jefferson, the child's mother, blames the baby's alcohol poisoning on Batiste, her sister. But authorities say Jefferson is also at fault because she didn'tseek medical attention when she realized the baby drank the alcohol. Thechild's maternal grandparents now have custody of the baby and a lawyer. Theydeclined to talk to Fox 26 on the day a judge issued a temporary protectiveorder barring both Jefferson and Batiste from the baby. And while there's noorder against Bradley, her daughter or grandson, she says no one from herfamily has seen the baby since she was hospitalized.
"That was, that is, still my great granddaughter, " she said."So what we're trying to find out is, 'can my grandson get her?' He is herbiological father. He wants custody of his child now."
