Reunited and, now, retired in Mulberry

Posted: Updated:
MULBERRY (FOX 13) -

Retired Tech Sergeant David Simpson was forced to leave his job as an Air Force M.P. for medical reasons. He spent roughly four years as a handler for "Robbie."

Simpson retired while Robbie was still on active duty at Spangdahlem Air Base in Germany, forcing him to hand the leash over to someone else and say goodbye.

"[It's] probably the most difficult task we have to do, other than having your dog passing away," Simpson told FOX 13.  "It was very tough to go through, and you don't know if the dog understands. Having to say goodbye, that is heartbreaking."

That "goodbye" didn't last for long. Simpson received a message almost a year after he and Robbie had been apart that Robbie was "hangin' it up."

Simpson was on the next possible flight to Germany for Robbie's retirement, and the pair was reunited again.

"I wish he could have been in the seat next to me the whole time. It was like shock and awe. I couldn't believe it was happening," Simpson recalled.

Simpson said he spent $2,000 to fly over and bring Robbie back. Now, he's getting Robbie, an 85-pound German shepherd, comfortable with his own three young children.

"My goal for him is to allow him to have as much fun and relaxation for the rest of his life. I just want him to enjoy his retirement," Simpson added.
