Amtrak completes repairs following Newark tanker explosion

NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) - NJ Transit announced on Friday that Amtrak crews had completed repairs to signals and overhead wire systems in Newark damaged by a tanker truck accident on McCarter Highway a day earlier.

The tanker carrying 8,500 gallons of fuel collided with another vehicle at about 1:30 a.m. near train tracks for Amtrak's Northeast Corridor causing an explosion and massive ball of fire.

No injuries were reported.

Delays were extensive on Thursday on the Northeast Corridor, North Jersey Coast and Raritan Valley lines as a result.

Westbound service to Newark Airport was suspended at about 9:45 a.m. on Thursday and had resumed by Friday morning.

Trains were up to 45 minutes behind schedule prior to the evening rush on Thursday. Raritan Valley line service was back to normal for several hours but would be impacted again during the evening rush, according to NJ Transit.

One NJ Transit train was held at Newark's Penn Station and another was held in Raritan during the Thursday morning commute. Some 600 passengers were bused between the stations.

System-wide cross honoring was in effect on NJ Transit bus, rail, light rail & private carriers on Thursday. NJT was also accepting PATH tickets in Newark.

Route 21/McCarter Highway was closed through the crash site on Thursday.

Police were investigating the crash.

Westbound service to Newark Airport was suspended at about 9:45 a.m. on Thursday and had resumed by Friday morning.NJ Transit said customers heading to the airport should take the No. 62 bus from Newark Penn Station.
