Superstorm Sandy

NYC to review post-storm rebuilding programs

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

Hurricane Sandy destroyed the corner house on Topping Street in New Dorp Beach on Staten Island. Its elderly owners have moved away. The corner delicatessen and several houses in the middle of the block remain shuttered.

The Chatis lived here. FEMA offered them $150,000, but the Chatis say they need double that to rebuild because of structural damage. They have spent two Thanksgivings, two Christmases and two New Years away from their home.

Staten Island Borough President James Oddo has asked Mayor Bill de Blasio to meet with city and state elected officials to discuss how to help those still without permanent homes or stable jobs because of Hurricane Sandy.

De Blasio has said that tens of thousands of New York City residents are still affected by the storm. He said the city's Build It Back program is too slow and bureaucratic and must be revised.

Oddo said that perhaps some sections of Staten Island should be built back with different types of buildings including small apartment buildings to withstand another superstorm.

De Blasio does say that the Bloomberg administration's resiliency plans to prepare the shores for future storms is a good plan.

The mayor said the city must come up with better plans for those still affected by Hurricane Sandy. He said his administration will come up with that plan in the next few weeks.
