In 1941, the DeLuxe Theater opened along Lyons Avenue in the historic Fifth Ward of Houston and it instantly became an entertainment and cultural destination for the city's African American community.
The theater operated for 28 years before closing its doors in 1969. It was later reopened as an art gallery from 1971 to 1973 but eventually closed again. This time, the doors remained shut for more than forty years.
Following a joint effort by the City of Houston, Fifth Ward Community Redevelopment Corporation, and Texas Southern University, this former film house is making a return to serve a new generation.
The $5 million renovation will turn the space into a 125-seat cultural arts center that will be used by TSU and will also feature classrooms and future retail space. The DeLuxe Theater will be finished and ready to swing its doors in October 2014.
