Groupon Gets President Wrong; Deliberate?

Posted: Updated:

The coupon site Groupon tried to commemorate President's Day with a ten dollar discount by honoring Alexander Hamilton, except he was never president.

Hamilton, the nation's first Secretary of Treasury, is on the ten dollar bill and one of our nation's Founding Fathers.

"The $10 bill, as everyone knows, features President Alexander Hamilton -- undeniably one of our greatest presidents and most widely recognized for establishing the country's financial system," writes Groupon.

However, he was never president as Groupon claimed on its site. Many viewer comments lament the state of our nation's knowledge of our history; however, more than a few readers explain that this was actually a deliberate hoax by Groupon.

For example, Daniel Bosworth wrote on ABC13, "It was a JOKE! SATIRE."

John Graham agrees on Politico, "Does no one get the fact that this was a way to get publicity? They are getting major advertising for free. This is a calculated and deliberate mistake. This is brilliant."

Calculated or not, Groupon definitely is getting publicity, including with Good Day and Mike and Sheinelle, and our nation is brushing up on our history in the process.
