Police Officer Surprised With Flash Mob Proposal

Posted: Updated:

An APD child abuse detective, Kim Devitt, and a victim service counselor, Jackie Garrnett, plan to get married in California this May, but they didn't have an official proposal, until now.

Keep an eye on the lady in the black shirt. Kim Devitt is a child abuse detective with the Austin police department.

At this point she thinks she's just watching dancers at Austin Bergstrom international airport.

But then the music changes.... And the cat's out of the bag.

Her partner of 13 years, Jackie Garrett, cues dozens of their family and friends to start a flash mob dance to "treasure."

Kim tears up as she sees who all has flown in for this moment.

Then her APD coworkers come dancing down the escalator. The chief even makes an appearance.

With the baggage claim full of their loved ones Jackie shows her this message.

Jackie said this moment has been in the works for 4 months.

"The day DOMA happened, Prop 8, we chit-chatted on the phone about it, said hey you know what we've been together for 13 years, let's get married in California, let's do this. And it was just over the phone and casual and I felt like that's the worst like proposal story ever and I wanted to make Valentine's day special for her in account to make up for that, " Jackie says.

Kim was definitely surprised.

"I thought, oh my gosh Jackie get out of the way, we've just interrupted that dancer," Kim recalls.

"After saying I'm going to kill you about a dozen times, I thought what a blessing in life that I have a partner like this."

"I'm going to sleep so good tonight because I'm not lying about anything and I'm not keeping a secret about anything," declares Jackie.

Now that they have a proposal they will never forget, the focus turns to their upcoming wedding date, May 30th.

"There aren't enough words, I just thank God she did do something like this," Kim says.
