Nolan Ryan rejoins the Houston Astros

Posted: Updated:
The Houston Astros announced Hall of Fame pitcher Nolan Ryan has returned to the organization as the club's executive advisor.

As FOX 26 Sports reported first on Tuesday, the team confirms Ryan will serve as an advisor to owner Jim Crane, general manager Jeff Luhnow, and his son Reid, the Astros president of business operations.

"With his experience, wisdom and knowledge he'll be a great help to the team," Crane said in an interview with FOX 26 Sports.

"It's a great honor and he's got a great pedigree and resume and we're very excited that he's come on board to help us."

Crane told FOX 26 he looks forward to working with Ryan on both the Astros business operations and baseball operatons.

"He's got experience on the baseball side extensively, but he also has some experience on the business side," Crane said.

"We'll try to use that knowledge and make improvements where you can with his expertise."

Before helping lead the Texas Rangers to back-to-back World Series as president and then CEO, Ryan pitched for the Astros for eight years and was a consultant to the club from 2004-08.

"I'm very excited to be back with the Astros," Nolan Ryan said in a statement released by the team. "I'm happy to assist Jim, Jeff and Reid in any way I can. The Astros have a solid foundation with a strong farm system. I think the future is bright for Houston and I'm looking forward to my involvement."

Luhnow said he will enjoy working with Ryan.

"Nolan Ryan's experience and insights will help us on the baseball side - both in terms of decision-making and in maximizing the productivity of our players," Luhnow said. "I'm fortunate as a General Manager to get advice and guidance from great former players and Astros - Craig Biggio, Roger Clemens and now Nolan Ryan."

The move by Nolan Ryan means his son, Reid, will be working together again.

"The opportunity to work with my father is very special," Reid Ryan said. "He's had success in baseball on many levels and will be a great addition to our organization. He will be an extremely valuable asset to us."
