Kindergartner Dies After Being Forced To Drink Soda

A two year investigation from the Hawkins county sheriff's department and the District Attorney's office is now over and now the father of Alexa Linboon and his wife are in jail.

 A lot of the girl's friends, when they were five years old, when they were kindergartners, are reliving what happened back on January 1st, 2012.

According to the sheriff's department, 42 year old Randall Lee Vaughn and his wife Mary Vaughn are charged with first degree murder, aggravated child neglect, and aggravated child abuse.

 They're both being held right now on $500,000 bonds in the Hawkins County Justice Center. We learned on January 1st 2012, a young girl was brought to the emergency room at a local hospital.

She was unresponsive at the time.

According to the DA, the young girl was forced  to drink two liters of grape soda and water as a form of punishment. 

The girl was taken to a Tricities Hospital where she died a couple of days later.

The young girl went to Surgoinsville Elementary School.

Some of her friends say the news is still hard to understand.

They're now just in the second grade.

 "She was a nice friend and everything. And she played with me on the playground, and she swung and we went down the slides and played tag," a former friend remembered.

We also stopped by the family's house in Surgoinsville. No one answered, but as you can see there's a truck that's out front with young girls etched on the back glass.

 Neighbors say that Randall, the father, was a quiet man, kept to him.

The couple pled not guilty Friday in court.
