Couple Weds in 24 Hours before Bride’s Mother Dies

Posted: Updated:

A New York couple organized a wedding ceremony in just 24 hours before the bride's mother died. The act of love has gone viral.

Aly Femia's mother Mary Quinn went to the doctor's office for neck pain less than two weeks ago. She was then told she had lung cancer that had spread quickly to her brain.

The family was hoping to find there were treatment options, but later found out Mary's condition was incurable.

With only a short time to live, Aly asked doctors at the Yale New Haven Hospital in Connecticut when she should get married so her mother could see before it was too late. They responded, "tomorrow."

Hospital Staff, Aly, Anthony's and their families quickly came together to put a in just 24 hours.

One doctor offered to take her wedding dress shopping. A group of them also bought Aly a bracelet that they gave to her before she got married. A social worker brought Aly her grandmother's handkerchief to signify "something old." The hospital even donated food and flowers and bought a cake. The hallways were filled with doctors and nurses, and the hospital chaplain performed the ceremony.

"The hospital was INCREDIBLE! They made my wedding possible," she said.

On Wednesday January 29 it all came together.

The wedding unified Aly and Anthony, who met as college students at Manhattanville College in New York. Anthony proposed to Aly on December 14, 2012.

They celebrated their engagement with friends and family and were originally supposed to get married in September 2015. The couple wanted to wait until Aly finished graduate school and Anthony recovered from shoulder surgery.

Aly and Anthony Femia met as students at Manhattanville College in New York and have been together ever since. Before attending Manhattanville, Aly graduated from Greenwich High School with me in 2008.

Aly's stepfather walked her down the aisle. Sixteen years ago, Aly also lost her father to metastatic lung cancer. "He loves me like his own daughter," she said. "We have a beautiful family, and no matter what happens we're all going to stick together."

On Monday, Aly's mother Mary Quinn died. She says her favorite part of her wedding was having her mom see her in a wedding dress wearing her string of pearls and seeing her smiles.
