Police: Junior High teacher had sexual encounters on campus

Posted: Updated:

A Phoenix math teacher is in jail tonight accused of having sex with a female student in his classroom and inappropriately touching another girl.

John Carlos Borja was a successful boys cross country coach at Alhambra High School for years.
Police say after he began teaching at Morris Udall Elementary he became sexually involved with students in the 2012-2013 school year.

"I'm ,I'm absolutely flabbergasted I cant even believe that I would never have suspected him of that or any part of his family" said Dominica MacDonald a neighbor.

Students at Morris Udall like 10 year old Laura Gomez asked tough questions Friday while parents questioned school safety. "Why would a teacher do that" said Gomez.

"Mom talking like if that happened to me she would be crying" said Kara Adame.

MacDonald felt even more comfortable letting her son play next door knowing he was in the care of a teacher. "Considering kids are in the classroom more than they are at you assume your sending your kids to school with people that you trust" said MacDonald.

School representatives tell me Borja's job status will be determined when the investigation is complete. He's facing 2 counts of sexual misconduct with a minor, 1 count of sex abuse, and 1 count of molestation.
