Assault reported at Arizona prison in Buckeye

Posted: Updated:

PHOENIX (AP) - Authorities say an inmate at Lewis state prison complex in Buckeye assaulted and injured a corrections officer before being restrained.

Arizona Department of Corrections officials say the inmate struck the officer several times in the head and body Friday morning. Guards in a tower then fired two non-lethal rounds at the inmate before he was restrained.

Corrections officials say the officer was taken to a hospital for treatment and that the inmate also was transported for medical evaluation. Details were not released.

The unit where the assault occurred was placed on lockdown.
