Souper Bowl of Caring Kicks off in Houston; How you can help

Posted: Updated:

For 66,000 people in and around Houston hunger is one of the most difficult challenges they have to overcome daily.  It's estimated 5,000 kids in the Houston area go hungry every single day.

This year the Houston Food Bank is kicking off the Souper Bowl of Caring. Here in Houston local grocery stores compete and join together to help raise funds for the food for the Houston Food Bank.

But the event goes beyond just grocery stores, in 2013 more than 1,000 groups participated in Houston collecting enough food for more than 2.47 million meals for our hungry neighbors.

The Houston Food Bank is hoping this year to raise enough food to provide 2.8 Million meals.

There are several ways you can participate in the Souper Bowl of Caring and make a huge difference in the life of a neighbor in need.

  • Text FEEDHOU to 20222 to donate $10 to the Houston Food Bank
  • Donate at your local grocery store: Buy a prepackaged bag of food at any HEB, Kroger, Randalls or give a cash donation at the register between now and Super Bowl Sunday
  • Donate at your door:  The Sam Houston Area Boy Scouts will be conducting a drive in many areas. The scouts will leave a reminder door hanger one Saturday and then return to pick up the food on Saturday Feb 1st. Donations will go directly to pantries served by Houston Food Bank, Brazos Valley Food Bank and Montgomery County Food Bank
  • Host a food drive at your school, business or house of worship
  • Volunteer on Super Bowl weekend, go to for more information
