Lawrenceville residents have trouble heating homes

Posted: Updated:
LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. -

Residents in Lawrenceville woke up to little or no heat on Tuesday.

The city says there's plenty of natural gas, but the high demand because of the bitterly cold weather taxed the system and caused low pressure in the lines.

With record low temperatures outside, many residents had trouble heating their homes.

Mayor Judy Jordan said that gas utilities crews were hustling to solve the problem. She stressed that the problem was low pressure and not a shortage in the gas supply.

"Because everybody is turning it on at once and then the pressure decreases from the volume that is in the line," Jordan said.

Jordan said she was hopeful that the problem wouldn't happen for another night.

"I am hopeful that it won't because I don't think the temperature is going to get quite so low," Jordan said. "We are monitoring the different pressure points that we have along the main to make sure that they are stable."

The mayor said officials would re-ignite pilot lights at no cost.
