Stay safe tips in extreme cold weather

NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) - With temperatures reaching record lows in New York City on Tuesday, health experts say anyone outdoors needs to take certain precautions to stay safe during the Artic blast.

Here are some tips to avoid frostbite and hypothermia:

Limit your outdoor activity; skin exposure can lead to frostbite -- a  medical condition where the skin and other tissues are damaged due to freezing--and hypothermia-- the condition of having an abnormally low body temperature.

Wear layers

Protect your extremities; hands and feet are at greater risk of frostbite because body heat is naturally reserved in the torso to protect the vital organs.

Wear an extra pair of socks and choose mittens instead of gloves because fingers stay warmer when next to each other.

Wear properly fitted winter boots. Boots that are too tight can limit or cut off circulation to the feet and toes.  Also, choose a boot that's insulated, has treads on the bottom.

Wear a hat.

Stay hydrated.

Signs you may have frostbite:

Itchiness or tingling on skin
Skin becomes pale or white

Signs you have hypothermia:
Confusion
Dizziness
