Brooklyn fire kills teenager, severely hurts sisters

Posted: Updated:

NEW YORK (AP) — Authorities say a fire tore through a home in Brooklyn, killing a 16-year-old girl and leaving two of her sisters with life-threatening injuries.

Firefighters searched through smoke-choked hallways to find the three sisters in a third-floor bathroom where they had fled for safety from the fire. It was reported around 5:30 a.m. Friday in a house on East Eighth Street.

Police identified the girl as Jasmine Guillaume.

She was pronounced dead on arrival at a hospital. Her 24- and 27-year-old sisters are hospitalized in critical condition.

Police say two other women in the home are hospitalized in stable condition. Both are in their 50s.

More than 100 firefighters battled the blaze. It was under control by about 6:30 a.m.

The Fire Department says the home had no working smoke detectors.
