Army Cyber Command moving to Ft. Gordon in Augusta

Posted: Updated:

AUGUSTA, Ga. (AP) - The Army is moving its cyberwarfare headquarters to Fort Gordon in Augusta.

The military announced Thursday that the Army Cyber Command will make eastern Georgia its new home. The Army expects the move to add at least 660 active-duty soldiers and civilian workers to Fort Gordon's payroll, with room to expand to as many as 1,500 total personnel.

The Army Cyber Command was established in 2010 to defend military computer networks and conduct cyberwarfare. The command oversees roughly 21,000 soldiers and civilians worldwide, but it's never had a consolidated home. Its troops are currently divided between several buildings in the Washington area.

Lt. Gen. Edward C. Cardon, commander of the Army's cyber forces, says the Army's decision recognizes the "real, sophisticated, growing, and evolving" threat of cyberwarfare.
