Ga. senator proposes bill to keep Christmas in schools

CARROLLTON, Ga. -

A local legislator is proposing a law to keep Christmas in Georgia schools.

State Sen. Mike Dugan says students and teachers shouldn't be pressured to downplay the Christmas holiday. He's sponsoring a bill that would legally protect people putting up Christmas displays in our schools.

"It's not illegal right now to say ‘Merry Christmas' or ‘Happy Hanukah' in the school system, but a lot of school systems are not because they're worried about retaliation or getting in trouble," Dugan said.

The so-called "Merry Christmas Bill" would allow schools to have Christmas, Hanukah or secular displays as long as schools include more than one of the three, such as a nativity scene and a menorah.

Schools can do this now, but some have shied away from celebrating religious holidays.

"They're afraid that they're going to step on somebody's toes and they're going to be involved in a lawsuit that going to take resources away from their business of educating our children," Dugan said.

Jill Hendricks says people shouldn't have to worry about being politically correct when it comes to celebrating Christmas.

"I am a Christian, my son is Jewish and I want him to be able to be exposed to all of the other religions and all of the other traditions," said Hendricks.

Jared Senfeld remembers being one of only three Jewish children in school.

"You do kind of sense people are a little bit nervous to be talking about Christmas around you," Senfeld said.

Dugan says he's received nothing but positive responses from people who hope to one day go back to saying Christmas tree instead of a holiday tree.

"I want to bring Christmas back to the community," Dugan said.
