Family still seeking answers in Fulton County inmate death

Posted: Updated:

The family of a Fulton County inmate who died in jail is now demanding answers.

Douglas Brown, a 41-year-old Army veteran, was at the Fulton County Jail for delinquent child support, but he wound up dead 12 days later.

Brown's family says the father of two's only medical complication was diabetes.

"Diabetes is a disease that is treatable," said attorney Brian Spears. "Death by diabetes is not necessary. Death by diabetes for this man was a crime."

Brown's family attorney, Mawuli Davis, said he interviewed a man in the Fulton County jail who claims to have witnessed Brown in distress.

"He was in a urine-filled diaper with vomit and feces all over his body and the eyewitness that we spoke with said he saw him seizing --having seizures -- yet no medical attention was provided," Davis said. "The allegation was he was faking."

FOX 5 talked with the Fulton County sheriff's office about Brown's death back in October.

A spokesperson told us then that "Mr. Brown made two trips to Grady Memorial Hospital during his incarceration. He also developed other complications".

The Fulton County Medical Examiner's Office has told Fox 5 that Brown died of natural causes.

The family wants to meet with Fulton County District Attorney Paul Howard and Sheriff Ted Jackson. They also plan to file suit against the company that operates the medical wing of the jail.

A spokesman for the Fulton County Sheriff's Office said their own investigation showed no deputies did anything wrong in their handling of the inmate.
