Holiday shopping at the Metropolitan Museum of Art

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

It's always tough finding those perfect gifts, so this year we went in search of gifts that actually double as works of art. And we found a lot to choose from. A silk scarf inspired by the house of Faberge and hand-painted 18th Century armchairs for your Christmas tree are some major statement-making jewelry. They are just some of the original creations you'll find inside the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

"Our gifts are just an expression and an extension of the artwork in our collection," said Cassandra Nash, the general manager of product development at the museum. She gave us a peek at some of the hottest gift items this season, starting with a wearable version of one of the most famous paintings of all time.

"It is based on a water lilies painting in our 19th Century galleries, it is by Claude Monet," she said.

But if you'd rather indulge you're inner Monet than wear his work, Nash suggests this comprehensive and colorful art set, a particularly big hit with kids.

"You never know -- you could be indulging the next artist whose artwork hangs on the Metropolitan's walls 50 years from now," she said.

Now what about for the person who has it all?

"You can be assured that no one else will have this," she said. "I have a wonderful jigsaw puzzle for you but it is no ordinary jigsaw puzzle… once you're finished assembling you have a wonderful three-dimensional iris screen,"

Alright so now we're at my favorite part of the gift experience.

"So here today in front of us is a collection inspired by a lion motif, and you'll see this motif throughout the galleries," Nash said. "Jewelry is our number one draw."

And speaking of jewelry, we saved some of the best for last: pieces from one of the most buzzed about exhibits of the season -- Jewels by JAR, Joel Rosenthal. JAR's decadent jewels are currently being showcased at the met. The designer has made some stunning souvenirs for fans to take home.

If you do buy a gift at the met, know it will have a big impact on the educational programs here and the collection, study and preservation of all the art.

More than half the population of New York City rides public transportation to work. No other metropolis in this country even approaches that percentage or the MTA's total number of riders. For that reason, New York likely ranks as the most energy-efficient city in the nation. But what would it take to make the city even more energy-efficient or even self-sufficient?
